Heathers

As the local soil around Chesham and Amersham contains high levels of chalk, we only stock the winter flowering varieties which are lime tolerant and flower from December to March. These will add rich colour to your garden during the winter months.

Heathers can be planted at any time of year as long as the ground is not frozen or water-logged. Usually they are planted in groups of 3 or 5 to give a large area of colour. They should be planted roughly 15 inches apart (measuring from the middle of the plant) and will take a couple of years to provide ground cover. For an immediate effect they can be planted closer.

Once planted it is very important to keep them well watered and prevent them drying out.

Each year after flowering, prune the heather to maintain its shape and encourage new shoots and flowers in following seasons.
