Hedge stock
Open ground hedging (small bunches) are available in the autumn. These are less mature than the bigger container grown hedges (e.g. Leylandi, Laurel, Taxius and Lonicera) that are available all year round.

Hedge Cutting

All hedges require regular maintenance to prevent them over growing. It is easier to lightly trim the hedge on a regular basis rather than heavy pruning. Hedges should be trimmed at least once a year (more for Leylandi, Privet and some conifers). Trimming new shoot tips causes the stem below to branch out making the hedge thicker.
Leylandi hedges grow very quickly (3-4 feet per year) and if ignored will require a specialist job to control them.
Hedges can be cut any time of year but avoid trimming from March to July as birds will have nested. Late August is the best time, although fast-growing privet needs to be cut every six weeks between May and September. Ultimately it depends on how tidy you want your hedge to look.
During winter months heavy snowfall can damage hedges. Snow lying on top of broad evergreen or conifer hedges can cause serious damage. Try to brush snow off the hedge as soon as possible to reduce the extra weight.
Some hedges are on boundaries and therefore the neighbours should be informed/consulted as they will need to maintain the opposite side. You should maintain the hedge at a height that is not a nuisance to them.
